recording, location recording and mixing

Picture
Multitrack recording is DAW based (Reaper and Pro Tools/MixBus 32c) and the facility to record 28 tracks at once, either in my studio or on location at your own desired venue such as a church, rehearsal room or house.

I use excellent preamps from Neumann, SSL, Prism, Audient and RME with crystal clear AD/DA conversion taken care of by Prism and RME. Cabling is Van Damme.

Outboard includes a pair of Pultec-style valve EQs from Warm Audio and a classic SSL buss compressor. I usually mix in a hybrid fashion, returning groups of tracks into an SSL Big Six analogue console for added depth, glue and the fun of manual fader riding !

I also mix to a vintage Studer A80RCMkII analogue tape machine with Dolby SR. It sounds beautiful.

Monitoring includes the stunning Spiral Groove Studio One nearfields - the world's most accurate nearfield mix monitors - coupled with Emotiva amplificiation.

I use a range of classic, high quality mics including a pair of AEA R84 ribbon mics which sound awesome on almost everything !

Other mics include Shure's outstanding KSM44 multi pattern condenser and large diaphragm SM7B. The SM7 is a wonderful vocal mic - as used by Bruce Swedien to record almost all of Michael Jackson's vocals. It's also great on snare, electric guitar and hi-hat.

I also carry vintage Sennheiser MD421 mics for drums and guitars, the industry standard Shure SM81 small diaphragm condensers and the diminutive secret weapon Line Audio OM1 and CM3 mics which are all ideal for acoustic recording, percussion and drum overheads.

For toms and snare, I also have the great Shure Beta 98 mini condensers. Other favourites include the Neumann KSM105 which shines on vocals and acoustic guitar and is also a killer snare mic.

I also use an original Rode NT1 FET condenser, extensively modified by U.S. mic guru Michael Joly to provide a performance virtually indistinguishable from the Neumann U87 with a silky smooth sound without the sibilance of the stock Rode NT1.

Numerous headphone foldback mixes are available.
