tru-tape : process your tracks with real tape
Nothing sounds like true tape.
Tru-Tape is what I call the process of mixing your individual tracks, stems and mixes onto 1/4" tape, delivering an amazing sense of warmth, glue and smoothness that is hard to replicate with a plugin.
The tape machine is a beautiful, well maintained ex BBC Studer A80. Built in Switzerland in the 1970s, this is one of the best models Studer built. The company is known as being the Rolls Royce of tape recorders.

I typically use Emtec Studio Master 468 tape running at 15 ips.
This is a +5 tape which means I can process fairly 'hot' to push for a sweet, tape saturated sound with nice third order harmonic distortion. This is perfect for processing drums, bass and guitars for extra punch and fatness or adding a vintage tape edge to a rock or soul vocal.
If we are looking for a smooth tape glue effect then I'd recommend processing through my Dolby 363 SR noise reduction unit. This would definitely be suitable for processing a whole mix.
I process the tracks individually in real time from ProTools, processing through the Studer, optionally Dolby SR, Pultec EQ and SSL compression and back into ProTools.
The resulting Tru-Tape tracks are then aligned and rendered ready to be flown back into your DAW session.
To help with alignment it's best to try to use a blip sound or click track count in at the start of every track you want to be processed with Tru-Tape. And please send the whole track, from the top to tail of your session - even if the instrument only shows up in certain parts of the song.
I can easily talk you through the process of preparing your tracks for Tru-Tape processing.
